The place: pool, sauna, hot tub and yoga facing the sea

The grounds step down towards the Aegean in terraces. An infinity pool and its bar, a sunken lounge and its fire pit, a Finnish sauna, a hot tub, a yoga space — everything here faces the same way.

The pool

The infinity pool and its bar

This is where the house gathers. The overflow edge of the guests’ pool runs straight into the Aegean: swim up to it and nothing separates the water from the bay. Mornings go here, and so does the hour after the beach — the outdoor bar and its stools are a few steps away, and it stays open at midday, when the house serves no meal.

Around the water there are daybeds under parasols and a sunken lounge with a fire pit, lit at dusk. That is where you watch the sun drop behind the hill: the day’s closing ritual.

  • The flat roofs of the house and the long pool running along the flank of the Cretan hill, bordered by a gravel garden of cacti and agaves, under a broken sky, Maison Meltem, Agia Pelagia
  • A large Cretan jar planted with a cactus and a wooden lantern on the terrace, in front of a built-in bench dressed with blue striped cushions, a low stone wall and the Aegean Sea stretching to the horizon, Maison Meltem, Agia Pelagia
  • The outdoor bar and its red stools beside the infinity pool, furled parasols and a tall palm, against the hillside and the sea at sunset, Maison Meltem, Agia Pelagia

Out of season

The Finnish sauna, October to May

The timber Finnish sauna is open from October to May, on request. Slatted benches, a stone-filled heater and a wide round window onto the coast make it the best argument for coming out of season: from October on, the beaches you have to reach early in the morning in summer can be enjoyed at any time, and the end of the day calls for dry heat rather than a swim.

The same holds until May. The sun sits lower in the sky, but the sea view remains, and the sauna takes over from the pool at the end of the day.

  • Two guests sitting opposite each other on the benches of the barrel sauna, the stove and its wooden bucket between them, the round window opening onto the turquoise cove, Maison Meltem, Agia Pelagia

The hot tub

The hot tub, at the foot of the grounds

Set among the shrubs below the pool, the hot tub has nothing but the sea in front of it. It is freely available and at its best at dusk, when the headland turns to a silhouette and the bay goes dark.

  • A bubbling outdoor hot tub, with a bottle of sparkling wine and three glasses set on the rim, between the pines and the Aegean Sea, Maison Meltem, Agia Pelagia
  • Two guests at the outdoor hot tub, one sitting in the water with a glass in hand, the other on the rim, under the olive trees, looking out over the Aegean Sea, Maison Meltem, Agia Pelagia
  • The outdoor hot tub at dusk, with the wooden barrel sauna and its shower behind, among the olive trees, overlooking the hill under a pink sky, Maison Meltem, Agia Pelagia

Body and mind

Yoga, fitness and massages

A yoga space is set out facing the open sea, on the terracotta terrace beside the pool: roll out a mat there, between the water and the drop to the bay. The fitness room is open from 8 am to 8 pm — squat rack, bench, dumbbells, exercise bike and rowing machine.

Massages can be booked on request. The table is set up outdoors, in the shade of the olive trees, with the Aegean beyond.

Staying connected

Starlink wifi, and working from here

The house uses Starlink satellite broadband, around 400 Mb/s shared among guests and available in the rooms and throughout the grounds. The connection supports video calls and remote work.

It is also what makes longer off-season stays workable: mornings at a desk facing the bay, afternoons by the pool, in the sauna or on the beaches below.

Making the most of the place

The guests’ pool and its bar, the lounge and its fire pit, the hot tub, the yoga space and the fitness room are open to everyone staying in the house, whichever room you have booked. The sauna is heated on request, and massages are booked ahead.
